Music Monday (SXSW edition): Shigeto

Shigeto

Local artist to: Brooklyn New York

RIYL: Samiyam, Electronic, Jazz

Artists take on pseudonyms for a multitude of reasons, but in Zach Saginaw’s case, those reasons run deeper than most. Zach records under the name Shigeto. It’s his middle name; it’s also his grandfather’s name, a tribute to the Japanese branch of Zach’s family tree. Shigeto also means “to grow bigger”—appropriate, given Zach’s premature birth-weight of less than a pound. Today, Shigeto stands for Zach’s vividly beautiful electronic music. Beat-driven but given to richly textured sound design, rhythmically fractured but melodically sumptuous, Shigeto’s music is a bridge between the past and present, bringing the artist face to face with a creative legacy that spans decades. source
Shigeto played the Ghostly International showcase at Bumbershoot a few months ago and we only caught a little. I hope to see more at SXSW 2012. Check back every Monday for a new band to check out at the next SXSW.

local artist to: new york city

riyl: avant-garde, afro-pop, jazz rock, animal collective, dirty projectors

skeletons are a bit difficult to peg for a certain style of music. each song is different from the last but yet the ‘people’ album is oddly cohesive and well put together. i would love to see this band live!

the shy trafficker

local band to: seattle washington, san antonio texas

riyl: indie, jazz, progressive

this post might be considered a lost cause since this fantastic trio is no longer together. but it is truly good stuff and while great bands don’t always last, the music will always live. the halves and have knots album is my favorite. there is a new band emerging from this one and it will be, well, pretty damn cool. just wait and see.
