Coachella: Weekend 1 Wrap up

We are still coming down from the excitement of Coachella. Here are bits and pieces of the first weekend, which is the better of the two…I may or may not be biased. If you are attending weekend 2, check out Coachella tips by Kid Dangerous. I think there will be live streaming again next weekend but lots of the past performances can be found on the Coachella youtube channel. Just today, there were photos added to the Coachella fb page and they are absolutely gorgeous. This was easily one of the most visually stunning music festivals I have ever attended.

Over the course of 3 days, we smuggled in 5 flasks, saw a total of 58 bands live, and checked the puppy webcam more often then we should have. Anyhoo, my favorite performances of the weekend were WU LYF, Yuck, GIVERS, First Aid Kit, Alesso, Andrew Bird, AWOLNATION, Real Estate, Housse de Racket, Childish Gambino and Grouplove.

today on the interwebs there seems to be a lot of cool things i want…

these heels would go with absolutely anything!

um…yummmmmmmm

currently gathering images for inspiration for the next tattoo. i am smitten with this style.

cute print from my high school pal, mursblanc, on etsy

camper bike: i’d add solar panels and twinkly lights!

i would drive to every good will and value village in a 50 mile radius to do this.

                                                                               perfect bag for summer.

the gambler

i have been playing lots of texas hold ’em recently and am even the point leader of the week in the seattle poker open! *yay!* i don’t claim to be a great poker player but i do claim to love the game. so naturally i have poker on the brain. here are some pretty sweet playing card inspired creations and goodies.

this would look lovely hanging in our house. (source)

omg, these suit hats are totally adorable! i could wear it at the championship tourney perhaps?? (source)

ahhh, my love of 8-bit video games and poker combined. (source)

2011 sxsw tips for music-goers

1. check out the amazing artists that create those awesome screen-printed concert posters at flatstock. flatstock 29 will run wed 3/16/11 through sat 3/19/11. my favorites are tara mcpherson and jason munn (small stakes).

(source)

2. download the sxsw go app or make a schedule using a good ole excel spreadsheet. a pre-printed out schedule was always pretty reliable for me. just make sure it is updated within a few days of the festival. this year, i’m using both.

3. wear comfy shoes! i’ve walked (and at times ran) everywhere between I-35 and waterloo records which is a span of 15 blocks. i will likely wear my trademark red shoes so say hi if you see me!

4. have your camera ready at all times. you never know what you will see. last year i saw a completely naked old man riding a bicycle. and you might see austin legend leslie or perhaps a celebrity sighting like bill murray who was in attendance last year.

5. go to shows at the lamar pedestrian bridge. it is not a designated or even legal venue, but some really good pop-up shows will likely occur here late at night.

6. don’t buy a badge or pass. the day parties are where it’s at! don’t get me wrong, i do attend the evening showcases but it is more worth it for me to pay at the door because chances are high that i will stay at that particular venue for the rest of the evening. oh and even if you do have a badge/pass you still won’t get into full venues.

7. don’t see the big headliners. chances are you can see them tour in your city within the next few months. while it would have been cool to see she & him last year, the lines were horrendous.

8. rsvp to day parties. i’m not sure the point of this, but do it anyways.

9. keep cash on hand. buy some band merch! plus there are lots of street food vendors and not all of them take credit. there has also been an influx of food trailers in austin in the last few years. keep track of them here.

10. be polite to everyone! you are in one of the most friendliest cities in texas!

week in film and tv 2.26.2011

exit through the gift shop (2010)

interesting documentary about street artists with a twist at the end. it portrays the works of banksy and shepard fairey (obey giant) among others. without giving too much away, just watch it. this film is up for an oscar and will likely win.

the runaways (2010)

music biographies are among my favorite kind of films. i had no idea that the runaways existed before joan jett and the heartbreakers. i liked this one and still can’t believe that dakota fanning is not a little girl anymore.

i’m still here (2010)

this is a horrible movie about joaquin phoenix’s transition from actor to rapper. joaquin starts to look like zach galifianakis (whom i love) halfway through and there are strange conversations with edward james olmos, sean combs, and ben stiller. it all seems forced and phony. and he can’t rap for crap. so it’s gotta be a hoax.

long way round (2004)

this is the second time we’ve watched this series. i love ewan mcgregor and michael loves motorcycles so it works out. it is an incredible journey of two friends riding motorcycles from london to new york. there is a second series, long way down, where ewan and charley ride from scotland to all the way down to south africa.

i love seattle: unique districts

the districts of seattle

i love the variety of districts that make up the great city of seattle. i have had so much fun exploring some of these neighborhoods in the last six months. so far my faves are fremont, ballard, wallingford, capitol hill and most recently west seattle. each area has its own unique identity and i just love that! this seattle districts screen print is pretty damn cool too and they are for sale at ork posters along with a slew of other cities.

this song from the postal service has always reminds me of this rad city:

art. vinyl. love.

oh, how i love the release of a new kidrobot dunny series! the azteca II series released yesterday and of course i had to buy some and found them at kitschy local shop, schmancy. i love these little blind boxes of art goodness and the feeling i get when i am about to open them. i love the excitement of not knowing what dunny will jump out of the foil wrapper. ♥ ♥ ♥

!!!!!!!

the mariachis are my favorite!

while i didn’t get all of my dunny choices, i am still pleased! i got the oscar mar black and white chase version (left) which i love. i really wanted the dani bravo’s frida dunny, but there is always the possibility of a good dunny trade!

guilty of being white

yay! december is here. i am still waiting for my holiday spirit to kick in. has it hit you yet? well, check this out. it is probably not good to watch if you are prone to seizures or can’t stand the band slayer. enjoy!

plastic man

art is all around us. can you see it? look in the trash can or at that pile of junk mail. can you imagine all of the things you can create? i love when people can make trash into something beautiful. these make me want to dig through all of the recycle bins on the street and see what goodies i can find. i prefer to work with glass and paper, but these plastic masterpieces are incredibly clever.

i want to hang these jellyfish all over my house!

stunning recycled art by aurora robson. her paper art is gorgeous as well.

plastic bag pinwheels by virginia fleck

plastic starburst. love it!

flower curtain perhaps?

don’t forget about the bottle caps!

my october symphony

october is my favorite month and this year it has crept up incredibly fast. so before this month is completely gone, i’d like to throw some love to my favorite month (and season).

adorable glass pumpkins

zombies & ZomBcon

seasonal lattes… no whip

dressing up pets

cheesy horror flicks

comfort food: apple cider donuts. smitten kitchen rocks!

pumpkin beer

fall colors!

she want that dunny love

the end of summer brought some major heat (bleck) and the new dunny series (yay)! my dunny friend, paul, and i shared a case of 25. it was so fun going back and forth choosing. we were giddy like little kids on christmas morning. he got the dunny he wanted and i got some cool ones too.  i was informed paul went to nyc kidrobot and picked this kickass dunny and this cool dunny and this cute one that i want so needless to say, i am jealous. he has the knack for picking the rare blind boxes. but i do love my dunnys by sneaky raccoon and doktor a the most. check out your local kidrobot shop (if you are lucky enough to have one) or online.
